Ingredients

  • bread4 slices
  • mushroom1 cup sliced
  • cheese1/3 cup grated
  • butter2 tsp
  • garlic2 cloves chopped

Method

  1. Season the mushrooms

Toss the sliced mushrooms with the chopped garlic, salt and a little pepper. Season them before they cook so the flavour soaks in, and slice them evenly so they soften at the same rate on the toast.

  2. Top the bread

Butter each slice right to the edges, spread the mushroom mix over, then cover with grated cheese. The butter forms a seal that keeps the bread from going soggy under the mushrooms as they release their juices.

  3. Preheat

Preheat the air fryer to 180°C for 3 minutes so the toast starts crisping the moment it goes in. A hot basket firms the base quickly instead of letting it turn damp under the topping.

  4. Load the basket

Lay the toasts flat in a single layer without overlapping. Giving each slice its own space lets hot air reach the edges, so every piece crisps evenly rather than staying pale where they touch.

  5. Bake

Bake at 180°C for 11 min. The toast is done when the mushrooms have softened, the cheese has melted and turned bubbly, and the base is crisp enough to hold its shape when lifted.
