Ingredients
- moong dal1/3 cup, soaked
- toor dal1/3 cup, soaked
- chana dal1/3 cup, soaked
- onion1/4 cup, chopped
- ginger1 tsp, grated
- saltto taste
- oil1 tsp
Method
Soak and grind
Soak all three dals together for 4 hours, then drain and grind them with the ginger and a little water into a thick, smooth batter. Soaking softens the lentils so they blend without any grit.
Add vegetables
Stir the chopped onion and salt into the batter and mix well. Keep the batter thick and spreadable rather than runny, so the cheela holds together and does not spread into a thin, fragile sheet.
Pour into tray
Grease a shallow air fryer tray or mould, then pour in a thin, even layer of batter. A thin layer cooks through evenly and firms up properly, where a thick pool would stay wet in the middle.
Cook until firm
Air-fry at 180°C for 16 min, then flip and cook for a further 3 min. The cheela is done when it is firm and golden with no wet batter left in the centre.
