Ingredients
- apple2 chopped
- flour1/2 cup
- butter1/4 cup
- sugar1/3 cup
- cinnamon1/2 tsp
Method
Prep the apples
Toss the chopped apples with the cinnamon and half the sugar until evenly coated. Chop the apples into even, bite sized pieces so they all soften at the same time and none stay hard while others turn to mush.
Make the crumble
Rub the cold butter into the flour and the rest of the sugar with your fingertips until the mix looks like coarse breadcrumbs. Using cold butter and stopping while it is still loose keeps the topping crisp, not greasy.
Layer in ramekins
Spoon the sugared apples into ramekins and scatter the crumble loosely over the top without pressing it down. A light, loose layer lets the hot air move through and bake the topping into a golden, crunchy crust.
Bake
Bake at 170°C for 20 min until the topping is golden brown and you can see the apple juices bubbling up around the edges. The bubbling tells you the fruit underneath is soft. Let it cool a little before serving.
