Ingredients
- bread4 slices
- cheese4 slices
- butter2 tbsp (softened)
- mixed herbs1/2 tsp
- ketchup2 tbsp (for serving)
Method
Butter the bread
Spread the softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice, right out to the corners. Full edge-to-edge coverage is what gives an all-over golden crust, since any dry spot stays pale and soft while the buttered parts crisp.
Add the cheese
Place 2 slices butter-side down. Layer 2 cheese slices on each, scatter over the mixed herbs, then top with the remaining bread, butter-side up. Keeping the cheese in from the edges stops it leaking and burning onto the basket.
Air fry the sandwiches
Set the sandwiches in the basket in a single layer. Air fry at 180°C for 8 min, flipping halfway, until the bread is golden and crisp. A gentle press with a spatula before cooking helps the slices hold together and toast flat.
Slice and serve
Once the bread is golden and the cheese has melted through, air fried at 180°C for 8 min in total, lift them out and cool for 1 min so the cheese sets a little, then cut each in half and serve warm with ketchup.
