Ingredients

  • bread4 slices
  • baked beans1 cup
  • cheese1/3 cup grated
  • butter2 tsp
  • onion2 tbsp chopped

Method

  1. Butter the bread

Spread a thin, even layer of butter right to the edges of one side of each bread slice. The butter crisps the base as it heats and stops the beans from soaking straight into the bread and turning it soggy.

  2. Add the topping

Spoon the baked beans over the buttered side, scatter the chopped onion, then cover with grated cheese. Keep the beans away from the very edge so they do not spill and burn, and the rim can toast up crisp.

  3. Preheat

Preheat the air fryer to 180C for 3 minutes. Starting in a hot basket means the bread base sets and crisps at once instead of slowly drying out, which keeps the toast firm under the weight of the beans.

  4. Load the basket

Place the toasts flat in a single layer with a little gap between them. Crowding traps steam and softens the bread, while space lets hot air reach every side so each slice browns evenly.

  5. Bake

Bake at 180°C for 10 min. The toast is ready when the edges are crisp and golden and the cheese has fully melted and turned glossy. If the cheese browns too fast, lay a small piece of foil over the top.
